When Hugh first moved to River Cottage his aspiration was to produce his own food. Today at River Cottage we like to encourage our guests to really consider where their food comes from. Food is at the heart of everything we do and it's origins and journey to the plate are just as important to us as the end result.

If you would like to learn more about our approach, join us for one of our outdoor courses next spring.
GET GROWING
If you've ever had a hankering to grow your own veg then this is the course for you. You'll come away from this course bursting with knowledge and enthusiasm to Get Growing at home.

The day will be a mix of indoor theory and outdoor practical sessions in the River Cottage Kitchen Garden. The groups are kept small so there is time to focus on everyone's individual gardening concerns and aspirations.
Whether you are a novice or already a proficient gardener you will find the day enlightening. And of course, you will enjoy a delicious lunch where you'll be able to relish just how good homegrown veg tastes!

Head Gardener Will shares his tips on what to do in the garden in October
  • Keep the base of autumn plants clean by removing dead leaves. This will reduce the risk of fungal disease and will remove habitats for slugs and snails.
  • Plant garlic cloves directly into the soil, this will give you a good crop of bulbs in June.
  • Be sure to dig up and bring in half-hardy plants like tarragon and lemon verbena before the first heavy frost.
  • Mulching perennial crops with compost will protect soil from weathering and feed the roots for the following year
  • Plant coriander and parsley in autumn as they grow really well undercover over winter and will put on a good flush in spring.
