SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER: A hello from Hugh, recipes, news and special events

Hello,

In theory, summer is slowly winding down – but it's having a pretty good wag of its tail. I'm still enjoying sun-kissed plums,  tomatoes and courgettes from the garden – enough to justify a Glutney session I reckon. Try this recipe, a harvest festival in a jar that can take any seasonal glut you can throw at it.

And I'm still basking in the warm glow of our summer festival a couple of weeks back. So I'm delighted to be hosting another, more intimate event at River Cottage very soon. On Friday 11th October, together with the brilliant River Cottage team of Gill Meller, Rachel de Thample and Helen Musgrave, we are offering you a delicious and hands-on 'Taste of Autumn', including foraging, wood-fired cookery, a bit of wild fermentation - and a hedgerow cocktail session!  I'll be giving a talk and Q and A, and signing books, ahead of a fantastic 4-course feast in the evening. There's still a few spaces – why not come and join us, for the very best of the season of mellow fruitfulness.

Friday 11th October

As Hugh mentioned above, this autumnal extravaganza is going to be a highlight of the season. Hugh has been closely involved in planning this amazing day-long event which includes a foraging foray with Head Gardner Helen Musgrave; joining Gill Meller for an outdoor cookery session; learning the art of fermentation with Rachel de Thample and a boozy workshop. Hugh will join the event for a Q&A, book signing and an aperitif before the evening feast.

PIGEON WITH BLACKBERRIES AND CHANTERELLES
This is as seasonal as food gets. In late summer, when the grains are being harvested, pigeons take the opportunity to help themselves to whatever the combine harvester leaves behind. At the same time, chanterelles are popping up and the hedgerows are groaning with blackberries.
